FIBA slaps P8.6M fine to Korea for skipping Manama window

Korea received stern punishment for skipping the Manama window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers last November.

The International Basketball Federation’s Disciplinary Panel announced Tuesday evening (Manila time) that the Korean Basketball Association, together with the Chinese Basketball Association and the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association, would incur a hefty fine plus deductions in their standing in the ongoing continental meet.

The three associations received a CHF 160,000 (PHP 8656221.61) bill. FIBA will distribute half the total to the teams who participated in the second window.

Moreover, Korea, China, and Chinese-Taipei were deducted two points in the standings, with a point being distributed to their poolmates.

This would also mean that the Koreans will drop to the last place in Group A with just two points despite still retaining its 2-0 record. The Philippines remains on top with seven points, followed by Indonesia with five points and a 1-2 slate. Thailand sits in third with five points and an 0-4 record.

Korea would have taken on Gilas and Indonesia in the second window.

The country then backed out of the Qualifiers due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which resulted in Indonesia playing only once in Bahrain. Meanwhile, Gilas only played Thailand twice – the first of which was postponed game during the opening window last February.

Korea will have to play four games in four days come the Clark window of the Qualifiers in February because of this.

Both China and Chinese-Taipei belong in Group B.
