Victoria Sports to host first WNBL combine as 148 players expected

Women’s National Basketball League’s first-ever Draft Combine will be held this weekend at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City.

A total of 148 aspirants will get the chance to showcase their skills in front of the teams in the two-day combine in the lead-up to the actual draft this month. All centers and forwards – with 80 of them on the list – are scheduled on Saturday, while the 68 guards get their opportunity on Sunday.

Applicants from all over the country – including the Ilocos Region, Baguio, Isabela, Cebu, Cagayan De Oro, and Davao – will be present in their quest to become part of the first-ever professional basketball league in the Philippines.

The Draft Combine supported by Victoria Sports and Chris Sports will be staged under strict health and safety protocols, after the WNBL’s close coordination with the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Medical and Pro Games team to ensure the highest standards of implementation.

NBL officials led by executive vice president Rhose Montreal also held several briefings to the aspirants via Zoom over the past few days to inform them about the protocols that will be implemented.

In line with its desire to give opportunities to women ballers all over the country, the WNBL is targeting to open its first season as a professional league in the first quarter of 2021.

Prior to turning pro, the WNBL staged its first season in 2019 with the PSI Lady Air Defenders capturing the title over Taguig, with Gemma Miranda named as Finals MVP and Janine Pontejos of Taguig being crowned as the season MVP.
