Ateneo great and ex-Ginebra guard Nonoy Chuatico, 55, passes away

Former National Team player Emilio “Nonoy” Chuatico (February 22, 1965-January 2, 2021) passed away in the US Saturday after a long battle with cancer.

He was 55.

Chuatico, a native of Bacolod City, had a stellar basketball career during his heyday.

A heady guard, he skippered Ateneo to the school’s first-ever UAAP championship back in Season 50.

After his collegiate career, Chuatico would be called up to the National Team, helping the Philippines win gold in the 1991 Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

A year later, he would be drafted as the eighth overall pick in the PBA Rookie Draft by Ginebra.

Chuatico’s PBA career only lasted for four years, ending it with Purefoods as he was traded for Vince Hizon in 1995.

Chuatico also played for MBA team Manila Metrostars in 1998 before becoming part of the team’s coaching staff a season later.

After his playing career, Chuatico became a businessman and an avid golf player.

Chuatico is survived by his mother, sister Maria Espaldon, brothers Paul and Bibo, and three daughters Dani, Quita, and Yena.
