Magnolia assures GAB it will help keep Abueva in check

Despite returning to the Philippine Basketball Association last year, Calvin Abueva is still holding a probationary license.

With this, Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero and team manager Alvin Patrimonio have vowed that it will support the continued reformation of the enigmatic forward.

“We hereby depose and state that we individually and collectively promise, pledge and undertake that we will provide Calvin Abueva the resources and support for his continued reformation to set as a good example to the PBA audience especially to the young fans and that we will submit to the judgment of GAB for whatever disciplinary actions, including suspension or revocation of our licenses, in the event that we fail to perform this undertaking,” said Patrimonio and Victolero’s statement.

Earlier, GAB Chairman Baham Mitra reminded Abueva that he still needs to be mindful of his compliance with the conditions set forth by the regulatory agency as part of the lifting of his suspension.

“Calvin is still under the six-month probation period.

“Even if he has transferred to a different team, as a professional athlete licensed by GAB, he still needs to honor what has been agreed upon and his commitment to the Board which was the basis of the reinstatement. He is a professional athlete and the youth look up to him. We expect him to set an example to the younger generation,” said Mitra.

Besides his completion of the Professional Code of Conduct and Ethics seminar, Abueva’s former team manager Paolo Bugia and head coach Topex Robinson have agreed to sign an undertaking that Abueva will receive with the necessary support to cope with the demands warranted by his professional practice as an athlete, which has now been wilfully and voluntarily assumed by Patrimonio and Victolero.

Abueva has completed his mandatory monitoring sessions until December, two months after the reacquisition of his license.

However, he was unable to attend last January citing that he had to make time for more pressing family matters as a reason.
