Army’s Gonzaga not closing doors on reunion with Cignal’s Daquis

With all the country’s top teams in the Premier Volleyball League, Jovelyn Gonzaga needed to make a tough decision.

Unlike in 2019 — where she suited up for both the Philippine Army in the PVL and Cignal in the Philippine Superliga — the 29-year-old can no longer do double duty. Both teams will now compete in the 2021 Open Conference.

And for the Army Sargeant, she needed to let go of Cignal.

“Very clear na sa Army talaga ako pupunta since Army talaga ang aking mother team,” she told OTR with Migs and Cesca.

“Sobrang naiintindihan naman ng Cignal and very supportive talaga sila.”

With this, her decade-long partnership with Daquis had ended.

From 2011 to 2016, Daquis was Army’s guest player. There, she formed a bond with Gonzaga.

In 2017, Daquis chose to stay in the PSL due to the league’s one league policy, since she had signed with the HD Spikers. The one-time V-League season MVP would not forget Gonzaga, as she recruited her to play for Cignal as well.

The duo’s last conference was an unforgettable run.

During the 2019 PSL All-Filipino Conference, Gonzaga and Daquis led Cignal’s Cinderalla run. They booted out league powerhouse Petron in the semis en route to an unexpected silver finish.

Fast forward two years later, the two will be on opposing sides.

Still, Gonzaga firmly believes that this is not goodbye, just a see you later.

“Hindi natin masasabi. Malay mo sa next conference or sa next season magkasama kami ulit,” she said.

“Hindi natin masabi eh, pero very positive na mangyayari at mangyayari ulit.”
