San Miguel hoping Romeo’s MRI shows only an MCL injury

San Miguel hopes that Terrence Romeo suffered nothing serious after getting hurt in their 2021 PBA Philippine Cup debut versus Meralco, Sunday.

The star scorer twisted his ankle with less than nine minutes remaining in the final quarter following a crossover attempt. His teammates had to carry him on the way to the dugout.

He did not return to the game since.

That spoiled his return to action after a shoulder injury cut short his run in the Clark bubble last year.

Romeo left with a team-high 18 points, on top of three rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 24 minutes off the bench. He was the catalyst of the Beermen’s fightback from 15 down but his efforts went for naught as they lost, 87-93.

But that, surely, is the least of SMB’s concerns. They now have their fingers crossed that the 2019 Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP only suffered a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury — nothing more, nothing less.

“We’re hoping that it’s just an MCL injury but we have to wait for his MRI first,” wrote team manager Gee Abanilla in a text message to Tiebreaker Times.

That remains a possibility since Romeo, as reported by One Sports’ Carla Lizardo, said that he heard a pop on the side of his knee.

Romeo immediately left for the hospital to undergo an MRI scan on his knee. Now, the Beermen are simply hoping for the best.
