FIBA moves Asia Cup to July 2022

Because of the surge of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Indonesia, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has moved the Asia Cup to July 2022.

“This evaluation has take into consideration multiple aspects such as current travel restrictions, the well-being of the participants, fan access and experience, and the objective of ensuring the highest quality of events,” said the memo sent by FIBA Executive Director-Asia Hagop Khajirian to all the members of FIBA Asia.

“Having concluded this process and after coordination with Regional Office Oceania, the following calendar update of FIBA Asia was confirmed,” it continued.

“The FIBA Asia Cup 2021 will be played as planned in Jakarta, Indonesia, but is rescheduled to July 2022 right after the window of the FIBA World Cup Asia Qualifiers.”

Besides Gilas, Indonesia, and Jordan, those already qualified for the tournament include Lebanon, Bahrain, Iran, Kazakhstan, Syria, South Korea, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.

Needing to go through the second round of qualifiers are Chinese-Taipei, Guam, India, Saudi Arabia, and Palestine.

The second round will still take place on August this year.

On the other hand, Gilas Women’s campaign in the Asia Cup Division A will still take place from September 27 to October 3 in Amman, Jordan.
