UST’s Jacob Cortez commits to San Beda

San Beda has its floor general for its post-Evan Nelle era.

University of Santo Tomas High School standout Jacob Cortez has committed to San Beda.

The second generation baller, who is the son of La Salle great Mike Cortez, confirmed the development to Tiebreaker Times.

“I chose San Beda because they are a very successful team and school.

“A lot of their players have gone pro and that is my goal to play pro basketball and I think it will be good for my development to reach that,” said Cortez as he looks to try to follow the footsteps of the likes of Baser Amer, Robert Bolick, and Garvo Lanete, among others.

Cortez, who stands at 5-foot-10, was a former La Salle Green Hills Greenie and a Tiger Cub.

He made his NCAA debut back in Season 94, norming 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 20 games played.

He then transferred to UST High for Season 82. There, he shone bright, averaging 15.93 points, 5.71 rebounds, 3.07 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.

The 19-year-old will have a full five years of eligibility.

Cortez knows there will be a lot of pressure wearing that San Beda jersey once Season 97 begins. But he is ready to embrace it.

“I know there is going to be a lot of pressure because I have big shoes to fill but I have gained a lot of confidence over the pandemic and I’ll just play my game,” he said.

“Fans could expect me to do my best and do whatever it takes to bring back the championship to San Beda.”
