Juami Tiongson shows calm during OT win vs San Miguel

Pressure, apparently, is not in the vocabulary of Juami Tiongson.

For the seasoned gunslinger, there isn’t really anything that he thinks of while on the hardwood, other than simply enjoying the game at every given opportunity.

“As much as possible, I just have fun,” said the 30-year-old point guard, “And, give thanks to the Lord always. The glory goes to Him.”

That has been his mentality ever since. And on Wednesday, he showed that such an approach could lead to greater things.

Tiongson fired a new career-high of 28 points, leading Terrafirma to a massive upset of powerhouse San Miguel through a 110-104 overtime victory.

And, yes. It was the Dyip’s first victory in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup after starting the conference with four consecutive defeats.

Ten of his points came in the fourth quarter alone, where he helped his side come back from 16 down to force an extra period.

The seven-year pro shot 47-percent from the field, including 4-of-9 from deep. He also had seven assists, three rebounds, and three steals.

What’s even more noteworthy is the fact that the Ateneo product only had one turnover in the 39 minutes and 36 seconds he saw action.

“Just like with every game, as much as possible I try to stay calm, try to have fun,” said Tiongson after the match at DHVSU Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.

“At the end of the day, it’s basketball.

But ever the unselfish individual, Tiongson tipped his hat to the entire Terrafirma for finally breaking through in the all-local conference.

“Everyone stepped up. Everyone did.”
