V.League: Espejo earns Best Player honors as Tokyo avenges loss to Hiroshima

FC Tokyo put on a show for its home crowd and avenged yesterday’s loss with a 25-21, 25-16, 24-26, 25-17 win against Hiroshima, Saturday in the 2021-22 Japan V.League Division 1 men’s tournament at the Sumida City Gymnasium.

Marck Espejo was at the forefront of FC Tokyo’s attack with 16 points scattered through 11 attacks – five from the backrow, three blocks, and two service aces. His performance earned him the best player of the game honors.

Unlike last night wherein FC Tokyo only got going in the third set, it was a different story this time.

Espejo’s squad was hot right off the bat, gaining a 25-21 first period, before a blowout 25-16 second frame.

Hiroshima responded with a 24-26 squeaker in the third but Tokyo bounced back right away with a 25-17 fourth to tie JT Thunders at 3-7.

Jonas Kvalen also made 16 points of his own, while Hayata Yanagimachi tallied 15 points, all from spikes.

Thomas Edgar paced Hiroshima anew with 25 points but lacked the local support he had yesterday.

Taishi Onodera was the only other JT Thunder to produce double figures in points with 14 including four blocks.

Espejo and his FC Tokyo will have next weekend off. Then they return to action on Nov. 27, against Toray at 2:00 PM, at Konohana Arena.
