Jenelyn Olsim to be more cerebral vs Julie Mezabarba

Jenelyn Olsim is hoping to make a lasting impression when she returns to the ONE Championship Circle.

The Team Lakay representative takes on Julie Mezabarba at ONE 158 in a crucial atomweight bout on Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The 24-year-old had a splendid 2021, debuting in style with a submission win over Maira Mazar at strawweight. She then followed that up by outlasting Bi “Killer Bee” Nguyen in an alternate bout for the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix.

She found herself in the semifinals after Itsuki Hirata pulled out of the tournament, but she eventually dropped a decision loss to wrestling powerhouse Ritu “The Indian Tigress” Phogat late last year.

That setback is in the rearview mirror now as she focuses on the tough Brazilian, and

Olsim expects a grind come fight night.

“Julie will definitely come in motivated. She’s also only starting to make a name for herself in ONE like me. I think she’s only fought twice,” Olsim said.

“She’s a good striker. She already fought Stamp in the Grand Prix, so I think ONE Championship definitely saw something in her, that’s why she [was] included in the Grand Prix.”

Like Olsim, Mezabarba found her way in the semifinals after beating Mei Yamaguchi in an alternate bout, though she succumbed to eventual tournament winner Stamp Fairtex on the same night.

Knowing the capabilities of Mezabarba, Olsim promises to use this fight to show how she’s getting better as time goes by.

“All I can say is that fans should expect me to leave an impression and [show] a more composed and intelligent version of me in this coming fight.”
