FEU willingly lets go of Abarrientos: ‘We are happy for RJ’

Far Eastern University expressed its support to now-former Tamaraw RJ Abarrientos as he enters the professional stage in Korea.

Last June 14, the 22-year-old guard signed a one-year deal to play for Korean Basketball League club Ulsan Hyundai Mobis.

And FEU athletics director Mark Molina fully supports Abarrientos’ move.

“We are happy for RJ,” said Molina, speaking on behalf of the school. “He worked hard to put himself in a position to be a professional.

“I wish him the best in the next phase of his career.”

Negotiations between the Phoebus and Abarrientos began in early June with the 5-foot-10 FEU lifer also working out with the team here in the country.

Abarrientos did not hide it from the university, making them aware of what was happening – from the workouts to the negotiations.

The nephew of PBA great Johnny played three years in FEU-Diliman, winning the championship in Season 79 and making it to the all-UAAP team in Season 81.

After two years of wait, RJ made his seniors team debut in Season 84.

In his sole year with the Tamaraws, he averaged 13.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.53 assists, and 1.13 steals, leading the school to a Final Four appearance.

L-Jay Gonzales, Xyrus Torres, Royce Alforque, Cholo Anonuevo, and Jorick Bautista will now have the task of filling the shoes left by RJ.
