2022 AVC Cup for Women

AVC Cup: T4-less Vietnam takes third win with sweep of Korea

Vietnam closed out its group phase matches on a rousing note, dominating South Korea in three sets, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16, in Pool A of the 2022 PNVF AVC Cup for Women, Wednesday afternoon at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Southeast Asian side ended the pool play with a 3-1 win-loss record to go in first place ahead of idle China (3-0). On the other hand, South Korea slipped to 0-3.

Head coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet decided to field his second unit in this match as outside hitter Nguyen Thi Uyen paced the squad with 13 points on 10 attacks, two blocks, and a service ace.

The quarterfinals-bound Vietnamese needed to fend off the young Koreans’ challenge at the start of the first two sets, especially in the opening frame where the latter got some of their offense clicking.

Vietnam set the tone with 20 points in that first set, before forcing the opponents to 10 errors in the next two sets. Its net defense pulled through as they denied 13 kill attempts from South Korea while scoring 33 spikes of its own.

Ly Thi Luyen led the defensive stance of Vietnam at the net with four blocks to go along with six attacks. Vi Thi Nhu Quynh added nine markers on eight spikes and one service ace.

South Korea once more saw Choi Hosun top score with eight points on seven attacks and a service ace. Kim Seyul added seven points, all from attacks, while Lim Hyerim scored three of the squad’s four blocks to go with three spikes.
