Ozar, Sugapong set to lead Gilas Women’s U18 as Yumul returns

After the boys, it’s the girls’ turn to take centerstage as they look to bring Gilas to Division A in the upcoming 2022 FIBA Under-18 Women’s Asian Championship Division B.

The tournament takes place from September 5 to 11 in Bangalore, India.

There are three holdovers from the Under-16 team that placed third in Division B two months ago in Amman, Jordan.

Headlining the returnees is Oxnard’s Kristan Yumul, who averaged 21.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 rebounds.

Also having another go are Camille Nolasco of Miriam College and BJ Villarin of Nazareth School-National University.

Leading the newcomers are 5-foot-8 UC San Diego-commit Sumayah Sugapong and 5-foot-8 ESB Villeneuve-d’Ascq Lille Metropole guard Louna Ozar.

Completing the squad are St. Thomas of Villanova’s Ryhanna Calvert, Point Loma Nazarene’s Kate Bobadilla, Fil-Canadian Kalynee Abraham, Sacred Heart’s Hope Manglal-Ian, De La Salle Zobel’s Candice Udal, Rochester University’s Ashley Loon, and Westview’s Sydney Heyn.

Gilas are slotted in Group A along with Thailand (September 5, 6:15 PM), Samoa (September 6, 8:30 PM), and Maldives (September 7, 4:00 PM).

The top team in the group will advance outright to the semis while the second and third-ranked teams will head to the qualifying rounds.

Head coach of the team is Patrick Aquino.
