NCAA 98: Jielo Razon clutch as Perpetual continues San Sebastian’s woes


Jielo Razon came through in the clutch for University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, beating San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 61-57 in the NCAA Season 98 Seniors Basketball Tournament on Saturday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.

Razon scored eight of his 14 points while knocking down all but one of his field goals in the final six minutes of the game. He also added five boards, an assist, and two steals.

Down by five, 49-54 right at the six-minute mark, Razon sank an up-and-under layup to cut the deficit to three, 51-54, before Romel Calahat and Razon exchanged three-pointers.

Lean Martel knocked down an and-one basket, right before a Razon deep ball with 3:59 left to give the, 59-57 advantage for Perpetual.

Mark Omega converted another basket to make it a two-possession ball game, 61-57 with 3:30 remaining

“Sabi ko sa kanila, kalimutan natin yon,” said Perpetual head coach Myk Saguiguit looking back ok their loss against Lyceum. “Dito tayo kumuha ng confidence. Naging maganda yung gameplan namin kaya ayan nagresult sa panalo.”

Alex Desoyo had one last chance for a comeback but airballed his floater with 24-ticks left.

Marcus Nitura and Mark Omega both had nine points with the former adding 12 rebounds while the latter finished with 11.

Kenneth Villapando led San Sebastian with 14 markers, eight boards, and three blocks. Romel Calahat had 11 points, 12 rebounds, an assist, and a steal.

Kim Aurin did not play on this one after feeling under the weather. The Altas veteran tested negative for Covid-19.

The Altas improved to 3-3 win-loss record while the Stags dropped to 2-3.

Next up for Perpetual is Emilio Aguinaldo College (0-5) on Tuesday, 3 PM. Meanwhile, San Sebastian will take on Colegio de San Juan de Letran (3-2) on Wednesday also at 3 PM.
