PVL: Vander Weide shows way as Petro Gazz makes quick work of Akari for joint third

SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA — Petro Gazz quickly dispatched Akari, 25-13, 25-14, 25-20, in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex here on Saturday.

Lindsey Vander Weide dropped 21 points on 18 attacks and three kill blocks in the Angels’ victory in just 1 hour and 10 minutes.

“Ito naman ‘yung gusto namin to bounce back from our game with Creamline. Gusto ko ‘yung naging reaksyon ng team, kung ano ‘yung ginalaw nila ngayon,” said Petro Gazz coach Rald Ricafort, recalling their four-set loss to the Cool Smashers.

MJ Phillips added 11 points on eight spikes, two service aces, and a block, while Myla Pablo chimed in eight points of her own.

The Angels flexed their muscles in all scoring departments, outscoring the Chargers on spiking (44-29), blocking (8-4), and service aces (4-0).

Vander Weide set the tone early, scoring three in the Angels’ 7-0 start en route to the 25-13 dominant first frame.

In the ensuing canto, Petro Gazz pulled away from a 7-4 close affair with a 10-5 surge, six off the American reinforcement, to cruise to an easy 25-14 second.

The Chargers kept in step with the Angels in the third period, down by just a point, 17-18. But Vander Weide, Pablo, Phillips, and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas connived on a 7-3 closing run.

“‘Yun ‘yung lagi kong nireremind sa kanila, ‘yung kaunting complacency na ‘yan hindi talaga pwedeng pumasok,” shared Ricafort on the third set.

The Angels rose to joint third with Choco Mucho with identical 2-1 records, while dropping Akari to 1-3, eighth in the nine-team field.
