Calvin Abueva humbled by rebounding milestone, but eyes still on championship

Championships matter the most, still.

Calvin Abueva reiterated as much after being feted by the PBA on Sunday night for becoming the 50th player in league history to collect 1,000 offensive rebounds — a feat he achieved during the Manila Clasico affair two weeks ago.

The recognition took place during halftime of Magnolia’s Commissioner’s Cup duel versus Blackwater, where the ‘Beast’ was awarded a plaque by members of the Board bannered of course by Commissioner Willie Marcial.

“Actually, that’s a bonus,” he said shortly after their 91-69 win at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

“Sabi ko nga, lahat ng achievements, lahat ng mga nakukuha ko, it’s a bonus. Mahalaga pa rin, makakuha ng championship.”

Nonetheless, he’s honored with the achievement, and that moment at center court became all the sweeter for the two-time Best Player of the Conference as his family was there in attendance to witness.

Aside from his wife and kids, his grandmother was there as well.

“Always supportive sa akin,” said Abueva, whose grandma came all the way from Pampanga just to see him get feted — and play, of course. “Siyempre ito, ‘yung basketball, kinahihiligan ng mga anak ko, kaya suporta sila.”

Still, Abueva is all business, with his sights now set on Magnolia’s next outings that will see the current league leaders take on contenders — Phoenix Super LPG, San Miguel Beer, guest team Bay Area, Meralco, and Rain or Shine.

“Hindi biro ‘yung mga next game namin eh,” offered the 34-year-old, who finished with six points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals in the conquest of the Bossing — their sixth win in seven outings.

“Actually, ito pa lang ‘yung gitna, wala pa ‘yung pandulo.”

The second game of each PBA gameday is live-streamed on SMART Sports.
