UAAP 85 HSCH: Adamson boys stay on top after Round 6; FEU-D takes top spot in girls


Adamson University stayed on top of the UAAP Season 85 Boy’s Chess Championship standings after a masterful 3-1 performance over University of Sto Tomas in Round 6, Sunday at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila.

It was John Rocel Simon (4 pts/5 games) who took the spotlight in Round 6 after leading Adamson with a win in Board 3 in just 37 moves of the Queen’s Pawn Opening with the white pieces against Francis Magpily (2/6).

Dustin Herrero (3.5/5) also contributed a win in Board 4 after a 44-move conquest of Ronald Dableo II (3/6) while playing the black pieces.

Janmyl Tisado (3/5) and Joshua Roque (4/5) then settled for draws in Boards 1 and 2, with Karlycris Clarito Jr. (5/6) and Emcel Gadut (4/6) to complete Adamson’s dominant debut in the second round.

Ateneo High School, on the other hand, asserted its mastery of De La Salle – Zobel with a similar 3.5-0.5 win in Round 6.

Raiz Roxas (2/6), Arena Fide Master Shealtiel Blanca (3.5/6), and Bryan Magugat (2/2) all took wins in Boards 1, 2, and 3, respectively, against Kervin Dominguez (0/5), Michael Dogelio (0/5) and Nathan Navarro (0/5). On the distaff side, it was Far Eastern University who shone the brightest after finishing its first half of the season on top after a 2.5-1.5 win over National University.

Siblings Ruelle (3/3) and Rhea Canino (1/1) scored the wins in Boards 3 and 4m respectively, against Alphecca Gonzales (1/3) and Yana De Vera (1/2), respectively.

Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian (2.5/3) secured the win after settling for a draw against Jelaine Adriano (1/3) on Board 1 as April Joy Claros (2/3) yielded to NU’s Ma. Elayza Villa (3/3) in Board 2.

University of Sto. Tomas also scored a 3-1 win against Adamson in Round 3 to solidify its bid for a podium finish.

Precious Yecla (2/3), Merjeri Janapin (1/3), and Christine Tabungar (3/3) all scored the wins in Boards 2, 3, and 4, respectively, against Christen Reyes (0/3), God Grace Morales (0/3) and Florence Isabedra (0/3), respectively.

Ferrose Joy Rafailes (0/3) was the lone fatality for UST after succumbing to Ma. Christina Samarita (1.5/3) in Board 1.
