Double sweep again? Thompson, Brownlee build strong case for Comm’s Cup awards

Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee are on pace for another sweep as the Ginebra stars have built strong cases for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup awards.

The reigning MVP has earned a legitimate shot of winning the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award after rising all the way to no. 2 in the race, giving Northport star Robert Bolick a major threat for the highly coveted plum.

Bolick is still at no. 1 but the Batang Pier crashing out of the quarterfinals against, coincidentally, the Finals-bound Kings has certainly hurt his chances.

Thompson, the 2021 Governors’ Cup BPC, rose to second with 33.9 statistical points after the semis. He was previously at third with 31.1 SPs behind Bolick and teammate Jamie Malonzo by the end of the eliminations last November 30.

Malonzo remains in the BPC hunt as well together with San Miguel star CJ Perez and Don Trollano of NLEX as they round out the top five.

Brownlee, meanwhile, finally took the top spot in the Best Import award race after steering the Barangay to yet another trip to the Big Dance.

Gunning for his sixth PBA title, the 34-year-old tallied 52.7 SPs to lead Nick Rakocevic of Magnolia (45.5 SPs) and the Beermen’s Devon Scott (44.8 SPs).

The 2021 Governors’ Cup Best Import was previously at third behind former NBA veteran Earl Clark of the Road Warriors and Converge’s Quincy Miller.

Both awards will be handed out prior to Game Four of the best-of-seven championship series at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
