EWP clarifies: Contract with Francis Lopez is null and void

University of the Philippines got a huge boost in clarifying the eligibility status of Francis Lopez.

In a letter released by Lopez’s former agency East West Private through Rappler’s Naveen Ganglani to Lopez, they shed light on what transpired during the time Lopez signed with them and Overtime Elite back in 2021.

“EWP invited you to join its roster of athletes in the USA for basketball training and to gain the experience and exposure necessary to bring your game and basketball career to the highest levels possible. In 2021, Overtime Elite took over the management of your application for a visa to come to the USA; unfortunately, this application was denied by the US Immigration Services and you were unable to travel as planned,” read the letter penned by EWP’s Patty Scott and dated last January 16.

After the Clark bubble of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers, the then-18-year-old Lopez signed a pro contract with OTE.

Lopez was able to receive $25,000 of the $100,000 deal but according to the Lopez camp, it was for the use of his image and likeness in the promotional materials of OTE.Overtime-Elite-Lebron-Lopez EWP clarifies: Contract with Francis Lopez is null and void Basketball News UAAP UP - philippine sports news

Due to the pandemic, Lopez never got to the US despite the multiple attempts made by his agency to get him a visa.

EWP also clarified that it no longer has a working relationship with Lopez.

“As of today, EWP does not have any working relationship with you. The Management Agreement that you signed with EWP, as per your request, is considered void. All mutual obligations between you and EWP are considered null and void as well.”

EWP also hopes that this letter will help Lopez hurdle the eligibility issues he will set to face prior to UAAP Season 86.

“We are issuing this letter to serve your personal purposes, as requested, and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.”
