Pinatar Cup: Meryll Serrano scores consolation as Filipinas fall to Scotland

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team suffered yet another defeat in the 2023 Pinatar Cup, this time a 2-1 loss against Scotland, Saturday night, at the Pinatar Arena in Spain.

Midfielder Meryll Serrano — who came in the 54th minute — scored a fantastic free kick in the 90th minute to produce the country’s first goal in the competition. However, it came too little and too late as Scotland all but sealed the win beforehand.

Coach Alen Stajcic’s wards conceded the opener in the 39th minute of the match. Scotland’s Lauren Davidson cut inside using her left foot from the right flank and unleashed a powerful shot past Filipinas goalie Olivia McDaniel to give her side the lead.

Come the second half, the Philippines saw itself in the backfoot anew in the 57th minute. Substitute defender Rachel Corsie found a way to score off a corner kick from her teammate Caroline Weir to make it a mountain to climb for the Filipinas.

The outcome meant that the Filipinas have failed to tally a point in the standings after two matches have been played. On the other hand, this is Scotland’s first win in the competition, which gives it all three points.

The Filipinas will wrap up their Pinatar Cup campaign when they take on Iceland this Wednesday. Kick-off time is scheduled at 3:30 AM Manila time.

Scotland XI: Fife (GK), Mukandi ©, Clark K, Kerr, Evans, Clark J, Murray, Davidson, Thomas, Grimshaw, Smith.

Philippines XI: McDaniel (GK), Sawicki, Long, Annis ©, Bolden, Eggesvik, Harrison, Barker, Cowart, Quezada, Guillou.
