Pinoyliga: Ateneo notches first preseason win at San Sebastian’s expense


Ateneo de Manila University had a victorious debut in Group Prime of the 2023 Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup after scoring an 73-69 escape of San Sebastian College Recoletos on Friday at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy.

This was the first overall preseason win of the Blue Eagles as they have a 0-2 record in the 2023 FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup.

Jared Brown scored high for Ateneo with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Joseph Obasa topped the rebounding department with 11 to go with seven points and a block.

Kai Ballungay and Forthsky Padrigao provided nine points each for the Blue Eagles, with the former adding seven rebounds.

Ian Espinosa chipped in eight points as well for the winning side.

Meanwhile, Rafael Are and Alex Desoyo both led the Golden Stags with 17 points apiece, while Rommel Calahat and Reggz Gabat supplied 11 points each, with Calahat getting five rebounds.

San Sebastian fell to its second straight loss, dropping to an even 3-3 and tying with Lyceum of the Philippines University.

In the second Group Prime action, John Dalisay towed Mapua University to deal De La Salle University’s first loss, 85-70, while gaining their third straight win in as many games.

This is the Green Archers’ second overall preseason loss as they have a 4-1 record in 2023 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, while in the FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup they have an unblemished 7-0 slate.

Dalisay spearheaded the Cardinals with 22 points built on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor, along with a rebound and two assists.

Cyrus Cuenco and Clint Escamis provided support for Dalisay with 16 and 13 points, with the former adding seven rebounds and a block.

Andrei Igliane scored 12 points and six rebounds as well for the Cardinals.

On the other hand, Henry Agunnane was the sole double-digit scorer for the 2-1 Green Archers, flirting with a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks.
