Converge owner denies rumors of forming ‘breakaway league’

In the midst of speculation surrounding the formation of a “breakaway basketball league”, Converge chief executive officer Dennis Anthony Uy asserted that the company’s primary focus is to grow the business and use the FiberXers as a marketing tool for the brand.

Uy, currently on a business trip en route to the World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco, to represent the Philippines, highlighted Converge’s genuine intention in joining the PBA.

“As a company, our goal is to become a household name in delivering world-class connectivity to the majority of Filipinos. We believe that having a PBA basketball team would bring us closer to the homes we serve,” Uy explained passionately.

Expressing regret over the PBA Board’s rejection of their proposed representative, Pampanga Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, Uy acknowledged the positive impact Pineda’s inclusion would have had on the league.

Pineda had previously offered his province’s support during the 2020 and 2021 PBA tournaments, demonstrating his love for the game.

Observers within the sports community have noted a decline in the PBA’s popularity, with the league’s fan base feeling increasingly disconnected due to the dominance of the SMC-MVP duopoly. Live attendance has dwindled, with the UAAP witnessing higher ticket sales, and talented players opting to bypass the PBA draft to pursue opportunities overseas.

“The time has come to level the playing field in the PBA.

“Fairness is a fundamental virtue of sportsmanship, and it is crucial that we respect the Filipino basketball fans who support us. We owe them the sports entertainment they truly deserve,” Uy concluded, emphasizing his commitment to reforming and reinvigorating the PBA for the benefit of all stakeholders.
