Filipinas face world no. 3 Sweden in ‘unofficial’ friendly

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team is gearing up for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and has scheduled a match against one of the world’s top international teams.

In an announcement made on Tuesday afternoon, the Philippine Football Federation revealed that the Filipinas will be playing against Sweden on July 17 in Wellington, New Zealand.

Sweden boasts players such as Sofia Jakobsson, Magdalena Eriksson, and Caroline Seger. The country currently holds the number three spot in the world rankings. In contrast, the Philippines is ranked 46th in the world, marking the country’s highest ranking in history.

“We express our gratitude to our friends from the Swedish Football Association for collaborating with us to make this match possible,” said PFF General Secretary Atty. Ed Gastanes.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for our Filipinas to challenge themselves against a world-class team before the FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

Under the guidance of Alen Stajcic, the team is currently preparing for the tournament through a training camp in Sydney. Their group stage campaign will commence with a match against Switzerland in Dunedin on July 21.

Following that, the Filipinas will face the host nation, New Zealand, in Wellington on July 25, and Norway in Auckland on July 30.
