PBA waiting on Chot for additional Gilas callups

The PBA reaffirmed its commitment to Gilas Pilipinas now that the national team is best by injuries in its preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Commissioner Willie Marcial said that the league is open to providing whatever could be needed especially after being approached by head coach and program director Chot Reyes regarding plans to add more talent to the pool.

“Kinausap ako ni Coach Chot. Sabi sa’kin, kung pwede siya kumuha. Sabi ko okay naman,” the amiable executive told reporters Friday.

“Open tayo kung may kukunin siya kasi baka may magka-injury nga e. Kahit player, coaches, utility, kung ano kailangan niya, open tayo,” he added.

Twenty-one names made up the World Cup pool but only 14 players have committed to join the upcoming training camp in Estonia.

Twelve players, together with the coaches and staff, flew out Thursday night.

Naturalized players Justin Brownlee and Ange Kouame to follow.

In the injury list are Roger Pogoy (finger), Ray Parks (wrist), Jordan Heading (back), Carl Tamayo (knee), and Calvin Oftana (calf).

Jordan Clarkson and Kai Sotto, on the other hand, are still busy with their respective NBA-related commitments.

Marcial said that Reyes has yet to provide names he wishes to add to the pool, although it will all be sorted out once Gilas returns from Europe.

“Pagbalik dun siguradong magmi-meeting kami ni Coach Chot,” he said.

“Pero bago siya umalis, nagusap na kami. Sige okay, kung anong kailangan niya.”

Gilas is pressed for time as it only has two months to prepare for the global hoops conclave set on August 25-September 10.
