Perth Glory signs another Filipina in Quezada

Liberty A-League Women’s side Perth Glory announced on Friday that it has signed Philippine Women’s National Football team standout Quinley Quezada to bolster its lineup for the upcoming 2023-2024 campaign.

This development comes three days after the Western Australian club recruited fellow Filipina team member, Jessika Cowart. Quezada is joining Perth Glory from Red Star Belgrade in Serbia.

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder, who boasts 22 goals in 51 international appearances for the Philippines, is expected to fortify Perth Glory’s offensive capabilities and help the team improve on its sixth-placed finish from last season.

“I’m very excited to be joining Perth Glory this season,” she said.

“Aside from Perth being a beautiful community to live in, I’ve heard so many admirable things about the club and team,” said the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship gold medalist.

“I followed the women’s team last season, and they had a great run in the league. For this upcoming season, I hope the team will evolve into a strong unit, constantly vying for that number one spot.”

“On a personal level, I want to continue learning, improving my technical skills, and striving to be a leader within the team in any way I can. I’m looking forward to joining the team and competing for the championship!”

Quezada played in all of the Filipinas’ matches in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as a starter under then-coach Alen Stajcic. She primarily played as an attacking midfielder but consistently dropped back to defend whenever the team was on the backfoot.

High expectations surround the former JEF United Chiba player due to her World Cup experience. She is the latest addition to a side that aspires to climb the ranks in the A-League. Apart from her and Cowart, Perth Glory has signed eight more players to bolster its squad for the upcoming season.

“Quinley is another player whose character and football abilities I had the opportunity to witness firsthand during the Women’s World Cup,” said coach Alex Epakis. “She is a senior member of the Philippines women’s national team and possesses a high level of versatility in multiple attacking positions.

“I have been mindful of the style of play we want to adopt this season, and having various attacking threats and types of players is a crucial part of that vision. Quinley will bring different attacking qualities to our team and will undoubtedly form a strong partnership with our other attacking players. She has an excellent demeanor and mindset and is a very focused individual who can bring out the best in her teammates both on and off the field.”
