19th Asian Games

RSA hails Gilas’ triumph over China, credits MVP’s vision

Coming off the debacle that was Gilas Pilipinas’ FIBA Basketball World Cup campaign, two of the country’s largest conglomerates joined forces to create a Philippine team that aimed not only to participate in the 19th Asian Games but also to secure victories.

The San Miguel Corporation and the MVP Group of Companies presented a united front, forming a squad heavily laden with Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) talent for the continental competition.

Despite numerous obstacles in their path, Tim Cone and the Gilas team persevered. After posting a 2-1 record in the group phase, the Philippines had to overcome challenges from Qatar and Iran to advance to the semifinals.

In the final four, Gilas faced a familiar opponent in Team Dragon, marking their second encounter with the squad in just 32 days. Like the rest of the nation, SMC President Ramon S. Ang watched the game with bated breath.2023-FIBA-World-Cup-Philippines-vs-Dominicana-Manny-V.-Pangilinan RSA hails Gilas' triumph over China, credits MVP's vision 19th Asian Games Basketball Gilas Pilipinas News - philippine sports news

“Allow me to join millions of Filipino basketball fans in congratulating Gilas Pilipinas — from its coaches to the players and team management — on our country’s historic return to the Asian Games Finals after 33 years,” said Ang after Gilas’ thrilling 77-76 victory over China.

Ang expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to support MVP Group Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan in this endeavor.

“Our sincere appreciation goes to Mr. Manny Pangilinan, Chairman Emeritus of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, whose vision and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the Gilas Pilipinas we cheer for today,” Ang continued.

“He conceived, nurtured, and invested in the program, and it is his unwavering support and guidance all these years that molded—and continues to drive—the team.”

On Friday, the Philippines faces Jordan, a team that defeated them during the pool phase. However, in Ang’s perspective, just reaching the final is a triumph in itself. Winning the gold, though, would make the victory all the sweeter.

“Gilas Pilipinas has brought great honor to our country, and San Miguel Corporation is proud to support the team, along with many others, including private sector partners, government, and the Philippine Basketball Association. Their collaborative efforts have made this Asian Games journey not only memorable but also triumphant,” Ang said.

“As Gilas Pilipinas sets its sights on the gold, let us all continue to stand united and wish them the best.”
