UAAP 86 WCH: Mhage Sebastian, Shaina Romanillos keep FEU unscathed

Far Eastern University maintained its momentum and secured its third win in as many matches with a 2.5-1.5 victory over Adamson University in Round 3 of the UAAP Season 86 Women’s Chess Championships at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Saturday.

The Lady Tamaraws solidified their hold on the top spot as they improved to six match points due to their undefeated streak. University of the Philippines (four match points) and defending champion National University (three match points) currently hold the second and third positions, respectively.

In Board 3, Woman National Master Mhage Sebastian [2.5/3] capitalized on Jashua Patria’s [0.5/3] shaky middlegame play, going a piece up and forcing resignation after the 42nd move, leading to an unstoppable checkmate by move 43 to kickstart FEU’s third straight win.

Shaina Romanillos [1/1] followed suit with a victory in just 20 moves of the Modern Defense, playing the black pieces against AdU’s Christine Hernandez [0/1] on Board 4.

Queenie Samarita [2.5/3] stopped the bleeding for the Lady Falcons as she scored a win by resignation on Board 2 over Woman National Master Mary Tan [2/3], but Woman National Master Vic Glysen Derotas [2.5/3] preserved the win for FEU as she settled for a draw with Robelle de Jesus [1/3] on the top board.

On the other hand, University of the Philippines moved up to the second position after a 2-2 draw against De La Salle University, as NU took a bye in Round 3.

Geraldine Guyo [1/2] secured the lone win for UP on Board 4, prevailing over Rinoa Sadel [0/2], while Jerlyn San Diego [2/3] and Jallen Agra [1.5/3] shared the points with Checy Telesforo [1/2] and Arena FIDE Master Sara Olendo [1.5/2] on Board 1 and 3, respectively.

University of Santo Tomas achieved its first win this season, posting a 2.5-1.5 victory over Ateneo de Manila University.

Princes Oncita [1/3] and Rohanisah Buto [2/3] each secured a win over Kristine Flores [0.5/2] and Alphecca Gonzales [1/2] on Board 3 and 4, respectively, before Josemier Panol [1/3] split the point with Ma. Elayza Villa [0.5/1] on Board 2 to secure UST’s triumph.

Jiessel Marino [1/2] delivered the lone win for Ateneo with a victory on Board 1 over Joannah Olay [0/2].

Round 4 will begin on Sunday, October 22.
