UAAP 86 HSCH: FEU-D maintains lead in boys’, girls’ divisions


Far Eastern University – Diliman continued to lead the Boys’ and Girls’ divisions after Round 5 of the UAAP Season 86 Chess Championships at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Sunday.

In the Girls’ division, FEU-D finished the first set of round-robin matches with three wins and a draw, leading the pack with seven match points. National University Nazareth School is a close second with six match points.

In Round 5, the defending champion demolished De La Salle Zobel with a 4-0 win, spearheaded by Woman National Master Ruelle Canino’s [3/4] victory over Sarah Cabodil [0/3] on Board 1.

Woman Master April Joy Claros [1/3], Woman National Master Bonjoure Suyamin [3/4], and Arleah Sapuan [1/1] completed the shutout win with victories over Fiorela Marinduque [0/3], Francesca Icay [0/4], and Zuri Navarro [0/3] on Boards 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

NUNS kept pace with the leaders thanks to a 3.5-0.5 conquest of Adamson University.

Woman National Master Lexie Hernandez [3.5/4] led the way with a dominant display on Board 1 over Florence Isabedra [1.5/3], while Sara Dalagan [3/4] and Juzeia Agne [1/3] also registered full points against Lira Pacer [1/4] and Ma. Christina Samarita [1.5/4] on Boards 2 and 3, respectively.

Yana De Vera [1.5/2] rounded out NUNS’ rampage with a draw against Christen Reyes [0.5/2] on Board 4.

In the Boys’ division, defending FEU-D was held to a 2-2 split by UST but remained on top of the standings with a slim lead in the tiebreaker.

National Masters Franklin Andes [2.5/3] and Oscar Cantela [4/4] secured full points against National Masters Karlycris Carlito [2.5/4] and Al-Basher Buto [3/4] on Boards 1 and 3, respectively.

UST’s National Master Oshirie Reyes [2.5/3] and Jian Rivera [3/3] then conquered National Master Jerish John Velarde [3/4] and Lemmuel Adena [2/3] on Boards 2 and 4, respectively, to complete the split.

Adamson University also secured third place after Round 5 with a 3-1 result against De La Salle Zobel.

Dustine Herrero [2.5/4], Karl Ballobar [2/3], and Robert Palisoc [2.5/4] each earned a point playing against Christian Malabanan [0/2], Gian Marco Caguiat [0/3], and Michael Dogelio [0/3] on Boards 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

National Master Tyrhone Tabernilla [2.5/4] scored Adamson’s only point with a victorious outing against Joshua Roque [1/4] on the top board.

Round 6 of the Boys’ and Girls’ divisions will resume on Saturday, November 4.
