UAAP 86 HSCH: FEU-D boys stay unscathed, NUNS girls take lead


Defending champion Far Eastern University – Diliman remained undefeated after a dominating 3.5-0.5 win over Adamson University in Round 6 of the UAAP Season 86 Boys Chess Championship at the FEU Tech Gym in Manila on Sunday.

FEU-D continued to lead the league with nine match points followed by idle University of Santo Tomas at seven match points.

National Master Franklin Andes [3.5/4] opened the floodgates with a 46-move conquest of Joshua Roque [1/5] in a Slav Defense: Chameleon variation while playing the white pieces on Board 1.

National Master Jerish John Velarde [4/5] then bounced back from last round’s defeat by dominating Dustin Herrero [2.5/5] in just 30 moves of the Queen’s Pawn Game playing the black pieces on Board 2.

National Master Oscar Cantela [5/5] also remained spotless with a fifth victory in as many matches, taking down Karl Richard Ballobar [2/4] on Board 3 as Arena FIDE Master Ritchie Abeleda [1.5/2] settled for a split with Robert Palisoc [3/5] on Board 4.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University snapped a three-game slide with a 2.5-1.5 victory over De La Salle Zobel.

Liam Batnag [2.5/4] and Luis Gutierez [2/5] nabbed full points on Board 2 and 3 against Gian Marco Caguiat [0/4] and Paolo De Vera [0/3], respectively, while Arena FIDE Master Marc Fua [1.5/3] settled for a draw with DLSZ’s James Karl Vinlua [0.5/3]n on Board 4 to ensure Ateneo’s victory.

Bryan Magugat [0/4] was the lone fatality as DLSZ’s National Master Tyrhone Tabernilla [3.5/5] notched his third win on Board 1.

In the Girls’ Division, National University Nazareth School overtook the top spot with defending champion FEU-D taking a bye in Round 6.

NUNS improved to eight match points after a 3.5-0.5 walloping of UST.

Woman National Master Lexie Hernandez [4.5/5], Juzeia Agne [2/4], and Yana De Vera [2,5/3] scored a point each after putting away Precious Yecla [2/5], Mecel Gadut [0.5/3], and Christine Tabungar [3/4] on Board 1, 3 and 4, respectively.

Sara Dalagan [3.5/5] closed out the dominant display via a draw on Board 2 with UST’s Nathalie Liscano [4.5/5].

Adamson also barged into the win column with a 4-0 shutout of DLSZ.

Florence Isabedra [2.5/4], Ma. Christina Samarita [2.5/5], God Grace Morales [3/4], and Elizah Bandejas [1/1] all scored wins over Sarah Cabodil [0/4], Fiorela Marinduque [0/4], Francesca Icay [0/5], and Zuri Navarro [0/4] on Board 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively.

Round 7 for both the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions is scheduled for Saturday, November 11.
