Kai Ballungay forgoes final year in Ateneo

Kai Ballungay has bid farewell to Ateneo de Manila University.

The 6-foot-7 forward has decided to move on from the amateur ranks, preparing to enter the professional level on Monday.

As a goodbye, he penned a heartfelt letter to the school.

“With strong feelings of excitement, I wish to share that I will be embarking on the next chapter of my journey – transitioning to the world of professional basketball. The decision to pursue this path was not made lightly whatsoever, and I am glad to bring with me the invaluable experiences and lessons I have gained during my time at Ateneo,” his letter read.

“Though my time with the Blue Eagles has come to an end, my connection to the program, the university, and to my brothers remains unwavering. I wish nothing but the best to the team moving forward, and I cannot wait to witness their continued success.”

Ballungay transferred from Stanislaus State to Ateneo during the pandemic.

He was a pivotal piece of the Blue Eagles that won the UAAP Season 85 title.

Shortly after the golden run last year, Ballungay also got married to his long-time partner.

In Season 86, Ballungay was the leading scorer for Ateneo, averaging 11.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.67 blocks per contest.

The Blue Eagles finished fourth place this season, bowing to eventual-finalists UP Fighting Maroons.

Joseph Obasa has also exhausted his eligibility, while Jason Credo has forgone his remaining playing years.
