Nico Almendras’ NU return remains uncertain: ‘Surprise na lang’

Nico Almendras was a latecomer in the 2023 Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference but when National U-Sta. Elena needed him the most, he picked up the phone and answered the call.

Aside from his leadership skills on and off the court, the 24-year-old spiker also made his presence felt by contributing in the offensive side especially in the crucial fourth and fifth sets to help the Nationals secure the championship over Cignal, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 15-8, on Friday night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

In the knockout title match, Almendras showed why he’s one of the league’s top spikers by dropping 20 points on 17 attacks, two blocks, and one ace while also shining on the defensive end with 22 excellent receptions and five digs.

The win was much sweeter because he needed to catch up with the team after coming in late as Dante Alinsunurin allowed him to rest.ST-2023-Awarding-7963 Nico Almendras' NU return remains uncertain: 'Surprise na lang' News NU Spikers' Turf UAAP Volleyball - philippine sports news

“Sobrang saya ko kasi kahit hindi ako nakapagperform nung mga unang games namin, ngayon medyo nakahabol na ako ng kundisyon, pinagkatiwalaan ulit ako ni Coach Dante sa loob at nafirst six ulit ako,” said the Batangas native.

However, unlike NU setter Joshua Retamar, he has yet to commit to NU for the upcoming UAAP Season 86 in February next year.

And he’s still keeping it a secret if he will return to Jhocson even if he has already gotten his bachelor’s degree this year.

“Siguro surprise na lang kung babalik or hindi. Surprise!” said the 6-foot-3 open spiker who was crucial to NU’s championship back in UAAP Season 85.

Despite that surprise, Almendras also shared that he hopes that he and the rest of the Bulldogs can bring this confidence to the next league they will join.

The UAAP men’s volleyball tournament will most likely start in February 2024.

“Sobrang happy namin as a team kasi madadala namin ito kung saan kami sunod na liga meron,” said Almendras.
