SBP embarks on new era as Erika Dy takes helm as ED

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) introduced Erika Dy as its newly appointed Executive Director on Monday.

Dy will fill the shoes of former executive director Sonny Barrios.

The announcement comes on the heels of Dy’s commendable stint as the Deputy Event Director of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, where she showcased her effectiveness as a leader.

Dy’s elevated role entails overseeing the strategic planning of the SBP and spearheading the implementation of its programs, aligning with FIBA’s ongoing efforts to foster the growth of basketball in the country.

Expressing enthusiasm about Dy’s appointment, SBP President Al Panlilio remarked, “We’re very excited to work with Erika as she brings new energy into the federation. We worked closely with her during the FIBA Basketball World Cup and saw up close what she brought to the table.

“With her experience as a basketball player, a coach, a sports advocate, and one of the primary implementers of the World Cup, we know she is capable of broadening the imprint of the SBP.”

Prior to joining the SBP, Dy had notable roles in the UAAP, serving as the Licensing Committee Chair and a member of the league’s Board of Managing Directors as representative of Ateneo de Manila University.

Dy’s credentials include a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from Columbia University and being a California-licensed attorney.

Recognizing her expertise in basketball, FIBA appointed her as the Legal Commission Chairwoman in October.

Expressing her honor at assuming the role, Dy stated, “It’s an honor to be entrusted by the SBP with this role. Basketball has been a huge part of my life, and I’m thankful to be given the opportunity to give back to the sport and the basketball community.

“The SBP has done so much since its founding led by Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan, and it is exciting to join the federation at such a pivotal time.”

Dy wasted no time in getting to work, already collaborating with key figures such as Head of Coaches’ Academy Jong Uichico, Grassroots Program Director Norman Black, 3×3 Program Director Eric Altamirano, and Institutional Support Director Anton Gonzales.
