Collins Akowe open to naturalization, pending parents’ approval

For someone who began playing basketball just a few years ago, Collins Akowe from National University Nazareth School (NUNS) certainly has immense potential.

The Nigerian center is currently leading all UAAP student-athletes in the MVP race for the High School Boys’ Basketball tournament – and, in the process, has helped a talented yet youthful Bullpups squad secure yet another postseason appearance.

For Akowe, it all started with a dream.

“It’s been nice and it’s been good. It’s a different kind of basketball, and I must say it is more physical. It’s new. But that’s my goal; I left home to chase my dream, but I know I won’t stop here,” said the 6-foot-10 big man.

In his short period here in the Philippines, Akowe felt quite at home as he found that the country had similarities with his homeland.

“I say it’s almost the same as Nigeria, so I adjusted easily. I don’t go out as I only study, train, and play basketball, but every person is different. Some are bad, but a lot of people have been good to me,” he shared.

It might be too early, but with the skills he has been showcasing, the idea of naturalizing such a talented and teachable baller would not be a remote possibility.

And Akowe very much welcomes the idea. However, there is one condition.

“It’s not for me to decide. I have to talk to my parents first. If it’s fine with them, then it’s fine with me. But if not, I can’t go against their will,” the 18-year-old said.

“But, if ever, it won’t be a problem. It is a great opportunity for me. It will be an eye-opener; so yeah, that’s a good idea.”
