Gilas vets Barroca, Aguilar secure team captaincy for PBA All-Star

Mark Barroca and Japeth Aguilar will be headlining the 2024 PBA All-Star.

The decorated veterans topped the fan voting and will therefore serve as team captains for the All-Star Game in Bacolod, which has previously hosted the weekend extravaganza in 2008.

The Magnolia floor general garnered the most votes in the fan balloting while the Ginebra forward came in second. Both the Gilas pioneers are now bound for their ninth All-Star appearance.

Similar to last season’s format, the two will get to pick their teammates through a draft, whose pool are made up of 27 others selected by the fans, the host city, coaches and media.

Scottie Thompson, June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Abueva, Christian Standhardinger, Jamie Malonzo, 2023 All-Star MVP Paul Lee, CJ Perez, and Maverick Ahanmisi are among the top 10 vote-getters.

Calvin Oftana, Stanley Pringle, Chris Newsome, Terrence Romeo, Arvin Tolentino, Jayson Castro, Jio Jalalon, Marcio Lassiter, Ian Sangalang, and Robert Bolick made it as well.

Nards Pinto, rookie guard Ricci Rivero, Juami Tiongson, and Gabe Norwood complete the Top 24.

James Yap received the most votes in Bacolod while Jason Perkins, Tyler Tio, Don Trollano, and Cliff Hodge were voted by the coaches and media to be part of the All-Star Game.

Meanwhile, Keith Zaldivar surprisingly garnered the most fan votes for the Rookies-Sophomores-Juniors game.

The seldom-used big from Converge will be serving as one of the captains for the RSJ showcase, the other being Magnolia shooter Jerrick Ahanmisi as he placed no. 2 in the voting.
