George Pascua focuses on roles, system in Navy debut

In the past 2023 season of the Spikers’ Turf, PGJC-Navy failed to enter the podium of the two conferences, namely the Open and the Invitational.

This upcoming 2024 Open, the Sealions are eager to change their fortunes with the arrival of new head coach George Pascua.

However, instead of instant results, Pascua wanted to focus on long-term growth and development for Navy, one of the two Armed Forced teams joining the brand-new season of the country’s men’s premier volley league.

He emphasized the Sealions’ need for an intact system that they can rely on down the stretch for an improved performance in their tournaments.

“Yung system kasi yun nga nakita ko yung endgame doon kami nawawala, kasi yung endgame doon mo makikita kung may sistema ba sila kasi kapag may struggle yung isang team, pag may sistema hindi basta basta mararattle,” said Pascua during the league’s media day.

“Pinanood ko rin yung mga previous games nila, nakita ko in-game walang nagli-lead sa kanila so yun ang winiworkout ko.”

There will be no expectations yet for Pascua and his team as he only joined the Sealions a week before the conference’s kick-off on Wednesday, March 13.

But Pascua, who delivered the FEU men’s team to four titles as a coach before, sees Navy’s potential into becoming one of the big forced in the league.

And it would start by identifying who’s who, by giving out roles to his players.

“Malaki ang potential ng team pero hindi [agad] mababago lahat. Dahan dahan lang siguro. Hopefully bago matapos yung tournaament makaadapt sila doon sa system ko,” said Pascua, who also handles the Adamson men’s squad.

“Yun nga yung winiworkout namin, yung mga tuneups namin kasi before wala silang stats eh, kailangan kasi yung stats kasi number one hindi pwedeng dayain yun eh. Naidentify ko naman na kung ano yung mga weaknesses and strengths nila,” he added.

Navy finished sixth out of 11 teams in the 2023 Open and eighth out of the 25 squads in the 2023 Invitational.
