Spikers Turf: Nonwel Sanama leads Savouge to convincing win over VNS

Savouge Aesthetics overcame a tight opening frame before dominating VNS-Nasty in straight sets, 26-24, 25-18, 25-17, in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, Friday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Spin Doctors didn’t have to do much, capitalizing on the Griffins’ 31 errors in the one-hour, 19-minute match to seal their first win of the tournament.

“As usual, sinasabi ko sa kanila na they have to respect the opponent. Pangalawa, kailangan sigurista sila. Kahit anong score na ‘yan, kahit lumayo man kami dapat sigurista talaga sila kasi ‘yan ang polisiya ko eh,” said Savouge head coach Sammy Acaylar after the victory.

Norwel Sanama took charge in the sweep, scoring 15 points on 14 attacks and one block along with six excellent digs for the Spin Doctors in the victory.

No other player scored in double figures for Savouge, with former UST standouts Charlee Magpayo and Lorenz Senoron chipping in seven and six points, respectively.

Rey Taneo tossed 10 excellent sets while Rikko Marmeto registered 13 excellent receptions and 10 excellent digs.

The Spin Doctors will face off against defending champion Cignal on Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. at the Philsports Arena.

On the other hand, Kenneth Culabat led VNS with 12 points, 13 excellent receptions, and six excellent digs while Wewe Medina, who had an impressive campaign with Army in the Invitational Conference, had 11 points and 12 excellent receptions in his Griffins debut.

VNS looks to bounce back against newcomer Criss Cross on Friday, 6:00 p.m. at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
