Spikers Turf: Joeven Dela Vega, Navy extend hot run, rip VNS

Red-hot PGJC-Navy stretched its dominant streak, making quick work of VNS-Nasty, 25-14, 25-16, 25-21, for its fifth consecutive victory in the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference, Sunday at the Philsports Arena.

Joeven Dela Vega starred anew for the Sealions, tallying 20 points on 16 attacks, two blocks, and two aces in just 73 minutes of action as Navy surged to a 5-1 win-loss record.

“Very proud ako sa kanya kasi talagang makikita mo yung aggressiveness niya, talagang nandoon yung tulong niya sa team,” said Navy head coach George Pascua after the victory.

Trailing by two points in the third frame, 15-17, the Sealions went on a tear with Peter Quiel scoring three points in a pivotal 6-0 run that gave them a 21-17 advantage.

Navy never looked back from there, trading hits with the Griffins before Greg Dolor wrapped things up with a powerful off-the-block attack.

“Kumbaga, beyond ‘to sa expectations ko. Kasi madaling pasunurin ‘tong mga ‘to, mga sundalo ‘to kaya ganun kabilis yung proseso ng pag-improve nila. Hopefully, yung consistency namin magamit namin sa mga upcoming games namin,” said Pascua.

Quiel finished with 14 points on nine attacks, four blocks, and one service ace to backstop Dela Vega.

Meanwhile, Dolor and Omar Lioc chipped in eight and six points, respectively, in their fifth-straight win.

Jack Kalingking had 12 excellent receptions and nine excellent digs while manning the floor. Additionally, Louie Pudadera tallied 13 excellent sets to lead the offense.

Navy will return on Friday, 4:00 PM to take on Criss Cross at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
