‘Sniper’ Baser Amer attributes showings to extra work he puts in

Baser Amer was back to his gunslinging ways on Sunday night when Meralco fought San Miguel in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup.

The four-year pro shot 52-percent from the field — including four threes — on his way to 26 points, as he played a big factor behind the Bolts’ masterful 125-99 conquest of the Beermen.

“Baser Amer is becoming a sniper for us,” said coach Norman Black. “He really shot the ball well from the perimeter.”

“Naging aggressive lang ako, tapos play the right way lang,” said Amer, who also had seven rebounds and five assists.

“Pupunta lang ako sa mga spots, then at the same time, ‘yung bola, dumadating lang sa ‘kin.”

Amer has been a key provider for the Bolts this conference, and a major reason why they currently sit in third place in the team standings with a 5-2 win-loss record.

For the San Beda product, though, he attributes his good showings to the extra work he puts in.

Amer shared that he has been spending more time on the basketball court. Besides Meralco’s practices, he is also working on his game with former Bolts assistant coach Xavy Nunag.

“Nag-iinvest ako ng time talaga sa court,” the 27-year-old. said. “Halos kalahati ng araw ko nasa basketball eh. Kasi may 8-10 a.m. ako, kasama ko si coach Xavy Nunag, tsaka may 1-3 p.m. ako sa Meralco.

“So as in, ‘yung kalahating araw talaga, nasa basketball. So ‘yun nga, ‘pag nagwo-work hard ka, talagang pagdating sa game, sobrang dali na lang talaga.”

Now, Amer is reaping the benefits of his hard work, as seen in how he helped the Bolts decimate the Grand Slam-seeking Beermen. But that doesn’t mean he’s settling.

“Malaking bagay ‘tong panalo na ‘to kasi nga palaging nire-remind ni coach na kailangan hindi kami makampante. San Miguel is San Miguel. Champion team ‘yan, powerhouse team ‘yan, pero stay hungry pa rin kami and stay humble kasi ‘yung mga natitira naming kalaban, malalakas pa,” he said.

“So pagdating namin sa practice, go hard pa rin kami, at tsaka tulungan pa rin kami.”
