Chabi Yo made sure to prove that he deserves MVP plum

Twenty-four hours before University of Santo Tomas’ win-or-go-home encounter versus Far Eastern University, Soulemane Chabi Yo received some pleasant news.

The 6-foot-6 Beninese student-athlete — who transferred from Colegio de San Lorenzo two years ago — was named the Most Valuable Player for UAAP Season 82.

And Chabi Yo admitted that pressure came with it.

“I was very happy, and at the same time, it was a big pressure for me,” said Chabi Yo, who accumulated 76.0 statistical points, built on his averages of 16.9 points, 14.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.

When he and the Growling Tigers exited the locker room, the entire UST community showered him with chants of “MVP!”

He made sure to prove them write.

“It was very surprising and emotional, and at the same time because you have people supporting you. It gives you more motivation.”

Inspired he definitely was.

Chabi Yo showcased his uncanny speed and power in the first half, dropping 19 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting to help UST build a 54-28 lead.

The Growling Tigers eventually staved off the Tamaraws, taking an 81-71 win to advance to the next stage of the stepladder.

The 23-year-old ended up with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists.

But the work is not yet over, as up next for them is last season’s MVP Bright Akhuetie and University of the Philippines.

For his part, Chabi Yo will not be satisfied in gaining the MVP plum and a bronze medal to boot.

” I have to prove that I’m the MVP. I give my best every game .”
