NU Bullpups closer to UAAP Boys’ Basketball first round sweep


Defending champion National University-Nazareth School closed in on a first round sweep of the UAAP Season 82 Boys’ Basketball Tournament after trouncing the hapless University of the Philippines Integrated School, 115-56, Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym. 

The Bullpups got five players in double-figures led by Gerry Abadiano’s 18 points. Meanwhile, Carl Tamayo had 16.

NU flexed its might on the paint with a big advantage in points inside, 70-10. The Bullpups also dominated on the fastbreak, outscoring their foes, 35-2.

Ray Torres played the whole game, posting 29 points and eight rebounds, but failed to stop UPIS from dropping to 0-6.

In other games, Far Eastern University-Diliman blasted De La Salle-Zobel, 80-63, while Ateneo escaped University of Santo Tomas in overtime, 85-81.

FEU used a huge second period, outscoring DLSZ 26-12, to turn a 16-18 deficit to a 42-30 advantage at the break.

Penny Estacio led the Baby Tamaraws to their fifth-straight win with 16 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Jorick Bautista, Patrick Sleat, and Chiolo Anonuevo tallied double-doubles in points and boards with 15 and 10, 12 and 10, 10 and 14, respectively.

John Dalisay had 18 points, while Kean Baclaan delivered 16. The Junior Archers crashed to their third consecutive loss and slipped to 2-4.

On the other hand, Josh Lazaro powered the Blue Eaglets in overtime, scoring six of his team’s seven points while helping limit the Tiger Cubs to 1-of-9 shooting.

Lazaro finished with 24 points, 18 boards, and four blocks, while Lebron Lopez contributed 17 markers and 18 rebounds as Ateneo rose to 4-2.

Jethro Escoto registered 24 points, 12 boards, and six dimes. Jacob Cortez got 21 markers, while Bismarck Lina unloaded 16 points, 12 rebounds and four rejections as UST fell to 2-4.

Meanwhile, Adamson University stretched its winning run to three games after thwarting University of the East, 72-65.

John Erolon uncorked 15 points on five triples, while John Figueroa unleashed 10 markers and 18 boards as the Baby Falcons improved to 4-2.

Jericho Montecalvo paced UE (1-5) with 18 points and eight rebounds.
