Alex Cabagnot feels blessed after moving to Top 10 all-time in assists

Alex Cabagnot couldn’t be grateful enough on Wednesday evening. Aside from his San Miguel Beermen breaking their cold spell in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup, the gunslinging point guard had made history.

The Filipino-American combo guard finished with 13 points and seven assists in the 106-94 win, and those seven dimes moved him to the 10th spot of the PBA’s all-time assists leaders, according to the league’s chief statistician Fidel Mangonon.

Cabagnot has surpassed Hall of Famer Francis Arnaiz, as he now has 2,939 assists.

“I wish my mom, my brother, and my family could’ve witnessed it. I’m glad we won, but it’s such a big accomplishment,” shared the seven-time PBA champion.

“Siyempre naman being in the league for… It’s my thirteenth year, so to God be the glory.”

Cabagnot confessed that he’d had no idea that he had already made history on Wednesday night. But to be mentioned along with the league’s all-time greats, according to him, is indeed a blessing in itself.

“I wasn’t really aware of individual feat like that until coach Dayong (Mendoza) told me after the game. So it feels good,” the 6-foot gunner expressed. “I think all the Top Ten members are all Hall of Famers and just being mentioned in there is a blessing.

“Just happy right now.”

Asked if there has been any assist of his that is memorable for him, Cabagnot recalled the one he gave Arwind Santos back in Game Seven of the 2015 Philippine Cup versus the Alaska Aces, which led to them capturing the crown.

“One comes to mind was I passed it to Arwind in a best-of-seven, he hit a shot. I guess that’s when Ronald Tubid called a timeout against Alaska and we needed a three-pointer and that was one of the a lot of memorable assists,” the 35-year-old cager said.

“I just thank all my teammates. Siyempre naman they made the baskets. I just passed it to them.”
