Alaska slaps Calvin Abueva with indefinite suspension

Things are getting tougher for Calvin Abueva.

In a statement released on Saturday, Alaska Aces team owner Wilfred Uytengsu declared that they have suspended their franchise player indefinitely after the star forward went missing for over a week.

Abueva did not report to Alaska practices right after the 2018 PBA All-Star Week, and he even missed their game versus the GlobalPort Batang Pier last June 2, where the Aces won, 109-103.

The Aces are in the midst of a five-game winning streak in the 2018 Commissioner’s Cup.

“The Alaska Aces has placed Calvin Abueva on indefinite suspension following his more than one week absence from practice and failing to advise the coaching staff and management of his whereabouts.

“While the team understands Calvin may be going through some troubling personal issues, it does not obviate his responsibility to the team. The suspension is effective immediately,” the short statement read.

The six-foot-two Abueva, before going missing in action, had been averaging 10.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in the mid-season conference, where his Aces are now 5-1.

Abueva may be suspended from Alaska, but they aren’t stop him from joining Gilas Pilipinas should the national team wish to include him for the third window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.

Abueva also missed Gilas’ practice last Monday at the Meralco Gym in Pasig City, as the Nationals have commenced their preparations for the World Cup Qualifiers later this June.

“Alaska, however, will allow Abueva to play for Gilas if coach Chot Reyes chooses to use them in the line-up.”
