On behalf of Gilas, SBP apologizes to Filipinos, basketball community

The free-for-all brawl that transpired between Gilas Pilipinas and the Australian Boomers will be remembered as one of the darkest moments not just in Philippine basketball, but also in world basketball.

The fracas saw another side to the fun-loving Filipinos and Australians, as the players and some fans were involved in the violent encounter.

In a statement released by the Philippines’ basketball authority, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, the NSA deeply regrets what transpired.

“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas apologizes to Filipino basketball fans and the basketball community for the incident that occurred during last night’s game,” SBP president Al Panlilio tweeted.

Nine players from Gilas were involved in a skirmish against four Australian players. Moreover, some fans tried to mob one of the Aussie players when they reached the sidelines.

“As hosts, we regret having breached the bounds of traditional Filipino hospitality. As the national team representing flag and country, we likewise extend our apologies to the Filipino people,” the statement furthered.

“SBP stands by its conviction that violence has no place in sports.”

FIBA is currently looking into the matter. The SBP, on the other hand, will fully cooperate with the International Basketball Federation.

“We will review the incident comprehensively and await the decision of FIBA with respect to disciplinary proceedings on the matter.”
