Aldin Ayo resigns as UST head coach

Aldin Ayo’s resigned as head coach of University of Santo Tomas, Friday evening.

“I have tendered my resignation as head coach of the UST Men’s Basketball Team,” his letter read.

Though this development comes a day after the University of Athletic Association of the Philippines’ Board of Managing Directors recommended to the Board of Trustees to sanction Ayo, Ayo already submitted his tender to UST last Monday.

The investigation of UST, with the cooperation of all parties, ended last Thursday. The UAAP Board of Trustees then briefly discussed the matter last Friday in an online meeting.

And for Ayo, he would like to apologize for the harm the ongoing investigation of the Bicol bubble has caused to everyone.

“I deeply apologize to all those who have been adversely affected by our activity and unnecessarily exposed to much condemnation especially the university.”

Moreover, the decorated tactician is ready to face the music.

“I take responsibility for my actions and shall face the appropriate sanctions.”

Back in 2017, Ayo, a two-time collegiate champion coach, left De La Salle University to join UST, which had been coming off a disastrous 1-13 campaign in Season 80.

The Growling Tigers finished sixth with a 5-9 record in Season 81 before copping a silver medal last year.

However, for the past two weeks, UST has been embroiled in controversy.

Last August 20, Growling Tigers skipper CJ Cansino was removed from the team roster. The 20-year-old later stated that he experienced “mental health” problems inside the Bicol bubble.

UST then began its probe last August 20, while UST’s Institute of Physical Education and Athletics director Jannel Abogado resigned from his post.

Still, Ayo is forever grateful to UST for the opportunity given to him.
